How do I stay sober even when I am triggered and sensitive
By Polly Green
The other day I was feeling super triggered. What that feels like in my body is my forearms get super tight and my whole nervous system felt like it was under attack.
The techniques that I like to use when I find myself in these situations really helps get to the root of self-sabotage and addictive behaviors, so that we don't have to reach externally for something when we feel this way.
Here are the 5 STEPS that help me when I feel triggered.
Stop what I am doing and find some time and space alone.
Close my eyes and start to breathe. Either in and out of the nose or out of the mouth, with no pause or gap between the inhale and exhale.
Go into the body and the discomfort.
Ask it what it needs.
Do what it says. (as long as it is healthy and for your highest and best good!)
This technique has been life changing for me and my clients. It truly deals with the root cause of the trigger.
